The Desert Called... We Answered Naked

There are few places in America where you can stand on miles of open playa with nothing but mountains stretching across the horizon. The Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon is one of those rare places, this is the third year, but 2nd annual, AANR-NW members gathered there to celebrate the freedom, friendships, and sense of community that make social nudism so special.

What began three years ago with 32 adventurous nudists from five states has continued to grow. This year's camp welcomed 42 participants representing seven states, making it our largest gathering yet.

The weather could not have been more welcoming. Daytime temperatures hovered around 85 degrees with comfortable cloud cover for much of the weekend. A few scattered showers drifted across the playa, dropping giant raindrops every few feet—just enough to settle the dust without ever turning the playa to mud. The occasional desert wind reminded everyone that nature is always in charge, but it also created opportunities for some unforgettable adventures.

This year also marked the debut of two new AANR-NW event canopies. Visible from miles away across the open playa, the bright blue tents became a welcoming beacon, helping visitors find camp while providing shade and shelter from whatever elements the Alvord decided to deliver.

One comment from a first-time visitor perfectly captured what those tents represented. As a couple approached camp, the husband quietly told his wife, who was new to social nudism, "See those four letters? AANR. That means you're safe, and respect is required here."

It was a simple statement, but one that reminded all of us what the AANR name and logo represent. The canopies became more than a place to gather—they became the heart of camp, where friendships were formed, stories were shared, and everyone was welcomed with kindness and respect.

Saturday, which also happened to be National Naked Hiking Day and the Summer Solstice, featured a caravan of vehicles traveling to Mickey Hot Springs. The colorful geothermal landscape was a breathtaking reminder of nature's incredible power and beauty. After returning to camp, several attendees honored the day with a nude hike across the playa, celebrating one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Northwest.

Back at camp, there was no shortage of activities. Desert games kept everyone laughing while AANR Ambassadors Andee Rogers and Tom Rogers introduced attendees to the AANR Ambassador Program, sharing how members can help promote social nudism through positive outreach. Their presentation inspired meaningful conversations, and before the weekend was over, seven attendees chose to become AANR members, demonstrating the power of simply bringing people together.

Before the sun slipped behind the Steens Mountains, everyone gathered beneath the dramatic desert sky for a group photo—a snapshot of 42 friends who came together to celebrate freedom, friendship, and the beauty of the Alvord Desert.

The evening continued with a community potluck filled with homemade dishes, laughter, and conversation. As darkness settled across the playa, colorful lights transformed camp into a magical gathering place. Although our scheduled DJ was unable to attend, the music played on anyway, proving that great memories are made by people—not perfect plans.

The playa itself became an outdoor playground. The steady breeze powered a paraglider, kite buggy, and land sailor, while others explored on motorcycles, electric bikes, scooters, ATVs, side-by-sides, and even a crowd-favorite steampunk buggy.

Perhaps the most meaningful moment of the weekend wasn't on the schedule at all.

A couple attending the nearby "UnRally" heard there was a group of nudists camping on the opposite end of the playa. Curious, they stopped by to introduce themselves—and never left. They packed up their campsite, moved across the playa, and joined us for the remainder of the weekend. Before heading home, they were already making plans to attend another AANR-NW event. As they said goodbye, they shared that joining our camp had been the best part of their entire trip and that they were grateful they had taken the time to come over.

That connection happened because Larry and Netty took a few moments to openly share the values of social nudism and the welcoming spirit of our community.

Sometimes all it takes is a friendly conversation to change someone's entire weekend.

One of the greatest things about the Alvord Desert Camp Out is that there isn't a packed itinerary. There is simply space to reconnect—with nature, old friends, and new ones. Whether you wanted adventure, quiet reflection, or simply the freedom to experience one of America's most unique landscapes without clothing, the playa delivered.

The Alvord Desert Camp Out continues to grow because of the people who attend. Every shared meal, every conversation, every laugh around camp, and every new friendship strengthens both our community and AANR.

If you've ever wanted to experience the vast beauty of the Alvord Desert while surrounded by welcoming people who believe in the values of social nudism, consider this your invitation. We'd love to welcome you to the playa next year.

After all, good marketing may get people to show up—but it is community, friendship, and genuine hospitality that give them a reason to come back.
